There is growing speculation that National Development Party (NDP) President Frank Tumpale Mwenifumbo could be named as a running mate in a political alliance that the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) is expected to form ahead of the 16 September 2025 general elections.

The rumours gained momentum following a statement by DPP Secretary General Peter Mukhito, who recently announced that the party will form an electoral alliance with other political parties in preparation for the upcoming polls.

Speaking in a phone interview, the NDP General Secretary Hon. Ellias Wakuda Kamanga said that the party is open to alliances, but will make decisions based on mutually agreed terms.

“No single party can attain the required 50+1 majority on its own, NDP will prioritize the alliance based on the conditions of the agreement. The speculations are expected and will not stop, Frank Tumpale Mwenifumbo is a veteran politician who has served in various key roles, and is the future of this nation”, he said.

As talks of alliances continue, political analysts believe the upcoming election will likely be shaped by strategic partnerships, especially in light of Malawi’s 50+1 electoral system which demands a candidate must secure a majority to win.
