The Department of Mining under the Ministry of Energy and Mining said that the country’s mining sector is lagging far behind and underperforming, as the revenue the state generates from it does not even reach 1%.

Director of Department of Mining Martin Mkasala, disclosed this during a one-day training workshop held in Lilongwe which organized for investigative journalists by the Association of Business Journalists (ABJ).

Martin Mkasala, said that the stagnation of the GDP occurred because the mining sector is one of the key areas meant to drive the country’s economy forward which indicated that the country’s administration under Professor Peter Mutharika directed the mining department to ensure that, by the year 2030, mining operations should contribute 10% to the economy, and in 2063 reach 25%.

Mkasala added that this training will greatly assist investigative Journalists to writing mining stories that are accurate and truthful, which is crucial for every Malawian to understand and follow the sustainable mining development plans.

ABJ Vice coordinator Alex Banda, said that this training will help Journalist thoroughly understand how mining operations run and how they contribute to the national economy so that the country can progress.
