Vice Chairperson of the committee Frank Mwenifumbo told Parliament that the committee is concerned about the country’s economic situation which has left many people without employment opportunities forcing them to seek jobs abroad.

Mwenifumbo said ongoing xenophobic attacks and other challenges facing Malawians in South Africa make it necessary for government to consider temporary travel restrictions.

He added that government is spending huge amounts of money to repatriate citizens stranded in South Africa a situation he said is putting pressure on public resources.

Mwenifumbo also raised concerns that some foreign nationals are taking advantage of free buses arranged by the Malawi Government to bring back Malawian citizens from South Africa.

So far about 41,000 Malawians have returned home after fleeing South Africa with government spending nearly K7 billion on the repatriation exercise.
